Uk Oman Joint Defence Agreement

The signing of this agreement today reaffirms the importance of optimizing joint military efforts to ensure the security and stability of the two friendly countries and pave the way for enhanced defence cooperation and joint exercises to achieve the objectives of the agreement. I am pleased to sign this agreement, which brings us even closer to one of our key partners. This is a historic milestone between our two nations and a significant strengthening of our mutual security. This is followed by the opening of the UK Joint Logistics Assistance Base in the port city of Duqm, which opened last year, and the announcement of a new joint military training ground, which is expected to open this year in Oman. The British-American military exercise, called "Storm Mountain", was launched on Wednesday by the Omani army, with the participation of the Omar Security Force and the Umbrella Force, as well as British units of the Royal Army. On 21 February, the United Kingdom and Oman signed a joint defence agreement to "activate joint military actions to ensure the security and stability of the two countries [Oman and Britain] and pave the way for more military cooperation and joint exercises." The agreement was based on the two countries` commitment to jointly defend their security and stability, their support for each other`s sovereignty and territorial integrity and the development of military relations, the Omani Defence Ministry said. Defence Minister Gavin Williamson travelled to Oman with Defence Minister Badr Bin Saud Bin Harib Al Busaidi to sign the agreement. In addition, the new Oman-British Mixed Training Area will enable the United Kingdom to establish, alongside Omani colleagues, a world-class military force based on the joint learning between Great Britain and Omani of Saif Sareea 3. The JDA follows the culmination of Exercise Saif Sareea 3, which took place in Oman in October and November 2018. It was the largest British army exercise since Saif Sareea 2, 17 years earlier, when 5,500 soldiers travelled to Oman to show off their land, air and sea capabilities. The JDA provides a launching pad for deeper defence cooperation, with the two nations working together to develop capabilities and promote regional stability.

His Excellency Sayyid Bader bin Saud bin Harib Al-Busaidi, Omani Minister for Defence, said: "This agreement culminates in the efforts of both countries to improve existing bilateral cooperation and strategic partnership between them.
